The most-followed account on Instagram is Instagram's own account (@instagram), with about 686 million followers. The most-followed person is Cristiano Ronaldo (@cristiano), with about 679 million, followed by Lionel Messi (517 million) and Selena Gomez (402 million), the most-followed woman. Those figures come from Epidemic Sound's ranking updated on October 7, 2026.

Follower count is only half the story. When Instapect audited 18 accounts with more than 100 million followers, their median engagement rate was 0.83%, and the range ran from 3.58% (Zendaya) down to 0.03% (National Geographic). Messi's posts average more likes than Ronaldo's, with about 164 million fewer followers.

Who has the most followers on Instagram right now?

These are the 10 most-followed accounts as of October 7, 2026, according to Epidemic Sound. The engagement column comes from Instapect's public-profile audits (method below). A dash means the account has not been audited yet.

Which accounts rank 11 to 20?

The next ten come from Wikipedia's list of most-followed Instagram accounts, which dates its table to mid-2026. Counts move every day, so where Instapect has a more recent audit, that figure is shown alongside.

Who is the most-followed person on Instagram?

Cristiano Ronaldo is the most-followed person on Instagram, with about 679 million followers as of October 2026. Only Instagram's own account has more. Lionel Messi is the second most-followed person at about 517 million, which puts the two footballers about 162 million followers apart.

Ronaldo's posts are not just widely seen. In Instapect's audit his recent posts averaged 13.32 million likes and about 235,000 comments, an engagement rate of 1.99%, which is more than double the 0.83% median for accounts above 100 million followers. You can see the full breakdown on his Instapect report.

Who is the most-followed woman on Instagram?

Selena Gomez is the most-followed woman on Instagram, with about 402 million followers, ranking 4th overall. Kylie Jenner (about 380 million), Ariana Grande (about 362 million) and Kim Kardashian (about 343 million) follow her.

Her engagement rate in Instapect's audit was 0.67%: below the 100M+ median, but steady. Her median post rate (0.65%) is almost identical to her average, which means her results don't depend on one viral post.

For football accounts specifically, the Instapect football hub compares every audited club and player on the same rules. Musicians are grouped in the music hub.

Does having the most followers mean the most engagement?

No. Among the 18 accounts above 100 million followers that Instapect has audited, follower count and engagement rate barely line up.

Engagement rate of Instagram accounts with over 100 million followers, from 3.58% for Zendaya to 0.03% for National Geographic

Three patterns stand out in the data:

  • Athletes and musicians lead. Zendaya (3.58%), Virat Kohli (2.83%), Lionel Messi (2.78%), Billie Eilish (2.59%) and Kylian Mbappé (2.55%) top the group.
  • Brands and publishers trail. National Geographic (0.03%), Nike (0.06%), Instagram itself (0.08%) and NASA (0.14%) sit at the bottom. Large brand accounts collect followers over many years, and many of those followers rarely interact.
  • Posting volume moves with lower rates. National Geographic posted about 21 times a week in the audited window and NASA about 14 times, while Zendaya posted about once every three weeks. More posts split the same audience's attention across more content. With 18 accounts this is a pattern worth noting, not a proven rule.

Likes per post tell a different story than follower counts

Average likes per post for the 10 most-followed Instagram accounts: Leo Messi averages 13.87 million, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo's 13.32 million

Messi's recent posts averaged 13.87 million likes, slightly more than Ronaldo's 13.32 million, even though Messi had about 164 million fewer followers when both were audited. Messi's median post (14.04 million likes) was also higher than Ronaldo's (11.51 million), so the gap is not driven by one outlier.

At the other end, Dwayne Johnson's 380 million followers produced an average of about 176,000 likes per post. He posted around 8 times a week, more than four times as often as Messi.

How Instapect measured engagement

  • Formula: engagement rate by followers = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100, the same public formula explained in our engagement rate guide.
  • Sample: each account's most recent feed posts (up to 12), with pinned posts excluded because they keep collecting engagement for months.
  • Quality bar: at least 6 recent posts with visible like counts. Ariana Grande's audit had 1 post and is excluded.
  • Dates: audits ran between August 28 and September 5, 2026. Follower counts in the engagement charts are the counts at audit time.
  • Median shown too: each account's report shows the median post next to the average, so a single viral post cannot inflate the picture.
  • Limits: these are public signals only. Reach, impressions and Story views are visible only to the account owner. Taylor Swift's posts showed no comments, which usually means comments were turned off, so her rate is effectively likes-only. Rankings of a small group (18 accounts) describe that group, not all of Instagram.

How to check any account's followers and engagement yourself

You don't need a tool to check these numbers. This takes about five minutes per account.

  1. Open the profile in the Instagram app or at instagram.com/. The follower count sits under the name. Instagram abbreviates large counts (for example 679M), so treat anything in the millions as approximate.
  2. Skip pinned posts. They are marked with a pin icon at the top of the grid.
  3. Record likes and comments on the 9 to 12 most recent posts that are at least 2 days old.
  4. Calculate: (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100.
  5. Check the median by sorting the posts by total interactions and taking the middle one. If the average is more than 1.5 times the median, one post is doing the heavy lifting.

How to check you got it right: for accounts above 100 million followers, most rates in this article fall between 0.03% and 3.6%. A result above 10% almost always means the follower count was entered wrong or totals were divided instead of averages.

If you'd rather not count by hand, an Instapect audit does the same calculation from public data in about ten seconds, and tools such as HypeAuditor and InsTrack publish their own engagement figures. Expect small differences between tools, because each samples a different set of recent posts.

Why follower counts differ between websites

Ranking sites rarely agree to the exact million. Epidemic Sound lists Ronaldo at 679 million on October 7, 2026, while Wikipedia's mid-2026 table shows 667 million. Three things cause most of the gap:

CauseWhat happens
Capture dateTop accounts gain or lose millions of followers a month, so a June figure and an October figure can differ by more than 10 million
RoundingInstagram shows "679M" on a profile; some sites round down, others round to the nearest million
Account removalsInstagram removes spam and fake accounts it detects, which can lower follower counts between snapshots

Always check the "as of" date on any ranking before quoting it.

No. Instagram's own account had an engagement rate of 0.08% in Instapect's audit, one of the lowest of the 18 accounts above 100 million followers. Zendaya, with about 178 million followers, had the highest rate at 3.58%.

Why is Dwayne Johnson's engagement rate so low?

His recent posts averaged about 176,000 likes against roughly 380 million followers, a 0.05% engagement rate. He also posted around 8 times a week, and accounts that post very often tend to spread their audience's attention across more posts.

Why do different websites show different follower counts for the same account?

They capture the counts on different dates and round differently. A ranking from June and one from October can differ by more than 10 million followers for the same account, so check each list's date.

Kylie Jenner and Dwayne Johnson, for example, were both listed at about 380 million in October 2026. Instapect refreshes this article monthly.
