# How Long Can Instagram Reels Be in 2026? 20 Minutes, the 3-Minute Reach Rule, and What 991 Public Reels Show

> Instagram Reels can be up to 20 minutes long, but only Reels of 3 minutes or less are recommended to non-followers. See the best length and data from 991 Reels.

Instagram Reels can be up to **20 minutes** long, whether you record them in the app or upload a video. The catch is reach: Instagram's Help Center says Reels **over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences**, so anything longer is shown mostly to people who already follow you. For growth, the practical limit is 3 minutes, and most Reels are far shorter: the median public Reel in Instapect's audits is **30 seconds**, and 79% run a minute or less.

So the question is rarely "can my Reel be this long?" It is whether the extra length is worth giving up the Reels tab and Explore.

## TL;DR: Instagram Reel length in 2026

| Question | Answer | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Reel length | 20 minutes (one clip or several clips added together) | [Instagram Help Center](https://help.instagram.com/2720958398006062/), checked 1 Nov 2026 |
| Longest Reel recommended to non-followers | 3 minutes | Same Help Center page: "Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences" |
| Limit before January 2025 | 90 seconds | Adam Mosseri's announcement of 3-minute Reels, January 2025 |
| Longer than 20 minutes | Only in "Features", a horizontal video test of up to 90 minutes for select creators in Brazil and the US | [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/26/watch-out-youtube-instagram-goes-from-short-form-to-90-minute-videos/), 26 Oct 2026 |
| Best length for engagement (business accounts) | 45 to 60 seconds (0.35% engagement rate) | [Socialinsider Reels length study](https://www.socialinsider.io/blog/instagram-reels-length/) |
| Typical real Reel | 30 seconds (middle half: 15 to 56 seconds) | Instapect, 144 accounts, 991 Reels |
| Does length change plays for the same account? | Barely: every band from 0 to 3 minutes landed between 0.99x and 1.05x of the account's typical Reel | Instapect, 105 accounts, 890 Reels |

**What the sources agree on:** every guide that ranks for this question now gives 20 minutes as the ceiling and 3 minutes as the reach cut-off, because both come from the same Help Center page. Where they disagree is the "best" length. Socialinsider's study of business accounts puts the peak at 45 to 60 seconds and shows engagement falling to 0.15% past 3 minutes. Socialinsider's separate Reels statistics show reach rate highest at 30 to 60 seconds (5.6%) and lowest past 2 minutes (3.5%). Instapect's account-by-account data, below, finds that once you compare each Reel with the same account's other Reels, length under 3 minutes moves plays by 5% or less.

- **Best for reaching new people:** under 3 minutes, and as short as the idea allows.
- **Best default if you have no data yet:** 30 to 60 seconds.
- **Best for tutorials, interviews and long stories for existing followers:** up to 20 minutes is allowed; accept that it will not be pushed to strangers.

## Instagram video length limits at a glance

| Format | Maximum length | Recommended to non-followers? |
|---|---|---|
| Reel up to 3 minutes | 3 minutes | Yes, eligible for the Reels tab, Explore and Feed suggestions |
| Reel from 3 to 20 minutes | 20 minutes | No, Help Center says it won't be recommended to new audiences |
| Reel recorded in several clips | 20 minutes in total | Same 3-minute rule applies to the total length |
| Trial reel | Same Reel limits | Shown only to non-followers first ([trial reels](https://help.instagram.com/1013292530224018/)) |
| Features (test) | Up to 90 minutes, horizontal | Test for select creators only, Oct 2026 |

Stories, Live videos and ads have their own separate limits and are not covered by the Reels rules above.

## How long can Instagram Reels be? The 20-minute limit explained

Instagram's Help Center page "Record a reel on Instagram" says: "You can record one or multiple clips that add up to 20 minutes. The progress bar at the top shows how long you've recorded." The same 20-minute ceiling applies when you upload a finished video from your camera roll or from a computer.

The limit has grown in steps. Reels were capped at 90 seconds until January 2025, when Adam Mosseri announced uploads of up to 3 minutes, saying Instagram had "historically only allowed reels up to 90 seconds". The Help Center now lists 20 minutes. Note that the page's own meta description still says "up to 3 minutes", which is why some older guides and AI answers repeat the 3-minute figure as the hard maximum.

On 26 October 2026, Instagram also started testing **Features**, horizontal videos of up to 90 minutes for podcasts, interviews and episodes, with a small group of creators in the US after a test in Brazil (reported by TechCrunch and Variety). Features are a separate format, not longer Reels, and most accounts do not have them.

## Why 3 minutes is the length that matters for reach

The 20-minute limit tells you what Instagram will accept. The 3-minute line tells you what Instagram will show to strangers. Reels over 3 minutes stay inside your follower base: they can appear in your followers' feeds and on your profile, but not in the Reels tab or Explore for people who don't follow you.

That matters because Reels are the format Instagram uses for discovery. If you post Reels to grow, a 3-minute-and-5-second Reel quietly turns off the part of Reels you came for. Trim it to 3:00 or split it into two parts. The [follower growth guide](/blog/how-to-get-more-followers-on-instagram) shows how much Reel plays depend on non-followers at each account size.

Socialinsider's numbers show the same cliff from the other side: Reels over 180 seconds averaged a 0.15% engagement rate, under half the 0.30% to 0.35% that every band between 30 seconds and 3 minutes earned.

## What Instapect's audit data shows about Reel length

We measured the duration of every Reel in Instapect's public-profile audits to answer two questions: how long real Reels are, and whether longer or shorter Reels get more plays for the same account.

**Method.** 153 public accounts audited between 28 August and 31 October 2026 passed the quality filter: report not delisted, at least 6 posts returned, no hidden like counts, followers above zero. 144 of them had Reels with a duration, giving 991 Reels. For the plays comparison we kept the 105 accounts with at least 5 Reels (890 Reels). Each Reel's plays and its likes plus comments are divided by **the same account's median Reel**, so 1.00x means a typical Reel for that account. This removes account size from the comparison.

### Finding 1: the typical Reel is 30 seconds, and only 1.9% pass 3 minutes

| Reel length | Reels | Share | Accounts posting this length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 15 seconds | 229 | 23.1% | 73 |
| 15 to 30 seconds | 267 | 26.9% | 105 |
| 30 to 60 seconds | 289 | 29.2% | 102 |
| 60 to 90 seconds | 101 | 10.2% | 56 |
| 90 seconds to 3 minutes | 86 | 8.7% | 44 |
| Over 3 minutes | 19 | 1.9% | 12 |

![Bar chart: share of 991 public Instagram Reels by length, 23.1% at 0 to 15 seconds, 26.9% at 15 to 30, 29.2% at 30 to 60, 10.2% at 60 to 90, 8.7% at 90 seconds to 3 minutes and 1.9% over 3 minutes](/images/blog/instagram-reel-length/reel-length-distribution.svg)

Half of all Reels are 30 seconds or shorter and 79% are a minute or less. The shortest was 1.3 seconds and the longest 12 minutes 37 seconds. Even though 3-minute Reels have been allowed since January 2025, only one Reel in ten in the sample runs past 90 seconds.

Account size changes this less than you might expect:

| Followers | Accounts | Median Reel length (median of each account's median) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10K | 48 | 28 seconds |
| 10K to 100K | 28 | 31 seconds |
| 100K to 1M | 22 | 25 seconds |
| 1M+ | 46 | 34 seconds |

Every tier lands between 25 and 34 seconds. Big accounts post slightly longer Reels, often interviews, trailers and behind-the-scenes cuts that their followers already want to watch.

### Finding 2: length barely changes plays for the same account

| Reel length | Reels | Accounts | Median plays vs account's typical Reel | Share beating the account's median plays | Median likes + comments vs typical |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 15 seconds | 213 | 62 | 1.00x | 49% | 1.00x |
| 15 to 30 seconds | 235 | 85 | 0.99x | 43% | 1.00x |
| 30 to 60 seconds | 258 | 79 | 1.00x | 45% | 1.00x |
| 60 to 90 seconds | 84 | 44 | 1.05x | 52% | 1.09x |
| 90 seconds to 3 minutes | 81 | 39 | 1.05x | 56% | 1.03x |
| Over 3 minutes | 19 | 12 | 1.01x | 53% | 1.32x |

![Bar chart: median Reel plays versus the same account's typical Reel by length, from 0.99x for 15 to 30 seconds to 1.05x for 60 to 90 seconds and 90 seconds to 3 minutes, 105 Instapect audits](/images/blog/instagram-reel-length/reel-length-vs-plays.svg)

Every band from 0 seconds to 3 minutes lands within 5% of the account's typical Reel. Reels between 60 seconds and 3 minutes did slightly better (1.05x plays, and 52% to 56% beat the account median), which fits Socialinsider's finding that short Reels under 30 seconds do not win on engagement. The likely reason is selection: people make a 2-minute Reel when they have something worth 2 minutes, such as a tutorial or a story, and those Reels hold attention.

The over-3-minute row is too small to read much into: 19 Reels from 12 accounts. Their likes and comments ran high (1.32x), while plays were flat (1.01x). That pattern is what you would expect from Reels shown mostly to existing followers, who are more likely to engage, but 19 Reels cannot prove it. Across accounts, the median Reel over 3 minutes reached 0.27 plays per follower against 0.49 for 30 to 60 seconds, a gap that mixes in differences between accounts.

### Limits of this data

- The 153 accounts are ones Instapect users chose to audit, weighted toward large public figures, brands and accounts in Dubai and South Asia. They are not a random sample of Instagram.
- Each account contributes its most recent posts, plus any pinned posts, so a few Reels date back to 2022. Instagram's 3-minute recommendation rule may not have applied to the oldest ones.
- Plays and likes are public. Watch time, completion rate, shares, saves and reach are private, and Instagram's ranking uses them. A Reel can match the account's plays and still lose on watch time.
- Durations are as returned by Instagram's public data, in seconds.

## How long should Instagram Reels be?

There is no single best length, but there are good starting points by goal. These combine Socialinsider's engagement bands, the 3-minute reach rule and Instapect's finding that the account matters more than the timer.

| What the Reel is for | Start at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Trend, meme or audio-led clip | 7 to 15 seconds | Short loops get rewatched; this is 23% of all Reels in the sample |
| One tip, one result, one joke | 15 to 30 seconds | One idea, delivered before people scroll |
| Tutorial, how-to, before and after | 30 to 60 seconds | Socialinsider's best engagement band (45 to 60 seconds) |
| Demo, story, short interview | 60 to 90 seconds | Matched or beat the account's typical Reel (1.05x plays) in Instapect's data |
| Long tutorial or explainer for strangers | Up to 3:00 | The last length that is still recommended to non-followers |
| Podcast clip, full interview, class for followers | 3 to 20 minutes | Allowed, but not shown to new audiences |

### How long should a Reel be by account size?

| Followers | Practical guidance |
|---|---|
| Under 10K | Keep most Reels under 60 seconds and test a 60 to 90 second version of your best idea; you need non-follower reach, so never pass 3:00 |
| 10K to 100K | Same, plus an occasional 90 second to 3 minute tutorial; these matched or beat typical plays in the data |
| 100K to 1M | Mix short reach Reels with longer pieces your audience asks for |
| 1M+ | Long Reels for followers are fine; the median big account still posts 34-second Reels |

## How to find the right length for your own Reels

1. **Write the idea first, then time it.** Cut the intro card, the "hey guys" and the pause after the payoff. Whatever is left is your length.
2. **Check the length before posting.** In the Reels editor, the timeline shows the total duration. Stay at 3:00 or less if the Reel is meant for new people.
3. **Post two versions of a proven idea a week or two apart:** one tighter, one with more room.
4. **Compare watch time, not just plays.** In the app, open the Reel, tap **View insights** and read average watch time ([how to see Instagram Insights](/blog/how-to-see-instagram-insights)).
5. **Compare plays with your own typical Reel.** A Reel at 2x your median plays is a hit for your account, whatever its length. The [Instagram analytics tool](/instagram-analytics-tool) shows any public account's Reel plays and views-based engagement, so you can see what length works for accounts in your niche.

## Mistakes to avoid with Reel length

- **Going 5 seconds over 3 minutes.** A 3:05 Reel loses recommendations to new audiences. Trim to 3:00 or less.
- **Padding a short idea to hit a "sweet spot".** A 12-second joke stretched to 45 seconds loses viewers; the band averages are starting points, not rules.
- **Treating 20 minutes as a growth format.** Long Reels are for people who already follow you.
- **Cutting a tutorial so short it no longer works.** In the data, 60 second to 3 minute Reels did slightly better than shorter ones for the same account.
- **Relying on old limits.** Guides and AI answers that say 60 or 90 seconds are out of date; so are those that say 3 minutes is the hard maximum.
- **Judging length by likes alone.** Likes can't tell you where people stopped watching. Use average watch time in Insights.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long can Instagram Reels be in 2026?

Up to 20 minutes, according to Instagram's Help Center (checked 1 November 2026). You can record one clip or several clips that add up to 20 minutes, or upload a finished video of up to 20 minutes.

### What is the Instagram Reel time limit for reaching new people?

3 minutes. Instagram says Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences, so they are shown mainly to your followers and not in the Reels tab or Explore for non-followers.

### Can Instagram Reels be longer than 3 minutes?

Yes, up to 20 minutes. They will still post and your followers can watch them; they just won't be recommended to people who don't follow you.

### Can I post a 1-hour video on Instagram?

Not as a Reel. The Reel limit is 20 minutes. In October 2026 Instagram began testing Features, horizontal videos of up to 90 minutes, with select creators in Brazil and the US. Most accounts do not have it yet.

### What is the best length for Instagram Reels?

For most accounts, 30 to 60 seconds is a good default, and Socialinsider's study found 45 to 60 seconds earned the highest engagement rate (0.35%). Instapect's data shows length matters less than the idea: Reels from 0 seconds to 3 minutes all landed within 5% of the account's typical plays.

### How long is the average Instagram Reel?

In 991 public Reels audited by Instapect, the median was 30 seconds and the middle half ran 15 to 56 seconds. Only 1.9% were longer than 3 minutes.

### Are shorter Reels better for reach?

Not on their own. Short Reels are easier to watch to the end, which helps, but in Instapect's data Reels under 30 seconds did not beat longer ones for the same account, and Socialinsider found under-30-second Reels behind the 45 to 60 second band.

### Why can't I post a Reel longer than 90 seconds?

The limit has been higher than 90 seconds since January 2025, so first update the Instagram app. Then try uploading the video from your gallery instead of recording it. Instagram's Help Center also says Reels features are not available to everyone, so some accounts get changes later than others.

### My Reel is over 3 minutes and nobody new is seeing it. What went wrong?

Nothing is broken: Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences. Trim the video to 3:00 or less, or split it into two Reels, and post the trimmed version if you want non-follower reach.

### Does the 3-minute rule apply to Reels made from several clips?

Yes. The rule is about the total length of the Reel, not each clip. Clips that add up to more than 3 minutes make a Reel that won't be recommended to new audiences.

### What is the minimum length of an Instagram Reel?

Instagram's Help Center does not publish a minimum. The shortest Reel in Instapect's sample was 1.3 seconds, and 7 of 991 were under 5 seconds.

### Do longer Reels get more likes?

Slightly, for the same account. Reels of 60 to 90 seconds had a median 1.09x the account's typical likes and comments, and Reels over 3 minutes had 1.32x, but that last group is only 19 Reels, and likes from followers do not mean new reach.

## Summary

Instagram Reels can be up to 20 minutes long, but only Reels of 3 minutes or less are recommended to people who don't follow you. Most real Reels are much shorter: the median is 30 seconds, and only 1.9% of 991 public Reels went past 3 minutes. Length under 3 minutes moved plays by 5% or less for the same account, so pick the shortest length that lands the idea, stay under 3:00 when you want new viewers, and check watch time in Insights.
